Smiles and Celebrations at the UK Corporate Games 2011 Closing Awards

hosted by
CSCThe Games Headquarters would like to offer their sincere congratulations to all our Award Winners for their outstanding efforts at this year’s UK Corporate Games Loughborough 2011.

Last week saw representatives from the winning organisations of the 2011 Games come together for an exceptional event at the prestigious Gherkin building in London.

Hosted by CSC, Platinum sponsor for the 2011 and 2012 UK Corporate Games, the guests relived their successes and team achievements over drinks and canapés. The Celebrations were followed by a formal podium presentation, where the winning organisations’ achievements were fully recognised.

Caroline Whalley-Hunter, Finance Director for CSC joined Corporate Games Life Members, Rose D’Costa MBE and Peter D’Costa MBE, in presenting the Corporate Awards to each organisation.

Caroline described the Games as “the best investment of its kind, offering limitless opportunities to organisations for team building, improving fitness in the workplace, widening employer engagement whilst also providing exposure to new clients” which, is what she calls “real value for money.”Winners on the podium once again at the UK Corporate Games 2011 Closing Awards.

Representatives from a host of organisations like Vodafone, Accenture, Onwards & Upwards, Ernst & Young, IBM, Intel, East Midlands Airport, Asda, Fujitsu, Towers Watson, KPMG, Lloyds Banking Group, RWE NPower, Nationwide, John Lewis Partnership, Sparta and Paul Lewis Haulage were recognised – each one proud of their team’s successes.

It comes as no surprise that these companies have already started to prepare for next year’s event.

With the UK Corporate Games landing in Preston for the Olympic year – the room was alive with talk of next year’s teams, including competitive yet friendly banter between organisations.

Wendy Gannaway, Managing Director of Onwards & Upwards, urges other companies to join in and sign up for the Games in Preston for 2012:

“No matter which who you are or what you do, the Games has a sport for you. It is an incredible event that guarantees a fantastic sports experience and an opportunity for you to really let your hair down and enjoy yourself. You’ll meet some fantastic people across the weekend from all walks of life, all over the UK. Win, lose or draw, my team are always buzzing after the Games weekend – it is the talk of the office on Monday morning!”

Our sincere congratulations go to all our Award winners for 2011 – and we look forward to seeing the teams again in 2012 to defend their titles!

Arguably one of the most iconic buildings in London, 30 St Mary Axe a.k.a. the Gherkin, will host this year’s Closing Awards Celebration for the UK Corporate Games Loughborough 2011.

The event is being kindly hosted by CSC, Platinum Champions for the 2011 and 2012 UK Corporate Games who also took part in this year’s Games.

Over 40 companies and sponsors will be attending the Celebration, with Team Leaders and Senior Management receiving awards on behalf of the winning organisations.

“This year the annual UK Corporate Games was held at the great sporting university that is Loughborough. Accenture increased the number of athletes attending by more than 50% on 2010’s effort in taking 100 athletes participating in a range of sports including Football, Badminton, Hockey, Netball, Karting, Tennis Rugby and many more.

With such an impressive number of athletes confidence was high that we would be walking away with medals from several of the events. Despite the heavens opening and a downpour ensuing on the Saturday, athletes overcame and persevered for that dream medal. It was an extremely enjoyable and rewarding experience for all athletes, both those participating in their first Games and those who are annual participants.”

David O’Brien, Team Leader from Accenture

The event will take place on Thursday 27 October 2011.
A welcome Drinks Reception will commence at 1930h in the Customer Briefing Suite.
The Awards Celebration will begin promptly at 20:00.

If you have received an invitation via post, please respond no later than 20 October to Loretta

Online Entry into the Games

For the past year or two, we have been testing the Online Entry process, which is a means of getting the details of Athletes in via the Corporate Games website.

People have long asked for such a mechanism, not even the partner projects around the world,  but the reality of the problem is that the details that are needing to be entered into our sports scheduling systems is not for the feint-hearted, hence the time take to not only develop the system, but to also ensure it’s success for a Corporate Games project.

The success of getting thousands of people to enter the UK Corporate Games online has helped us to prove that the Online Entry website works really well, we’re pleased to announce that we’re going to rolling it out to more and more Corporate Games around the world!

From the website, payments are accepted either via credit card or via a Corporate Account, which is akin to a pre-payment account that Team Leaders can used to pay for multiple entry forms and party tickets.

Watch this space for more information on the next Games to feature Online Entry!

Preparation for a Games

As any of the Corporate Games get closer each week, more and more of the preparations for the running of the project are being finalised.

Some of the bigger-picture details, such as where the Games are to be staged, or which sports are to appear on the Official Programme, are sorted out sometimes a year or two in advance, whereas some of the finer details, such as where the Parade route will be, or how the Party venue will be dress, are sorted out nearer the time, as these ‘details’ are dependent on other influences, such as the number of anticipated Athletes, for example.

In the past, people that I have met during the Games weekend are amazed at how the Games weekends are staged. It’s easy to think that someone has organised the Party, for example, and that it ‘just happens’, but there’s actually quite a lot of work involved in that area alone, and that’s not really what the Games are all about, even.

Having been on this side of the curtain for quite a while now, it’s easy to get blasé about some of the various aspects within the Games weekend, but when we get to see the sports taking place over the weekend itself, seeing people all across a city competing in the Games for their organisation, the feeling is quite humbling to say the least. Thousands of people put their trust in us to stage a weekend of sporting activities, most of which consist of around 20 sports in all, as well as the Party, the Parade and Closing Celebrations.  Even the prizes for the Tennis Ball Hit Out have to be sourced.

Working at a Games office really is good fun. Like any job, it has it’s pressures. For us, trying to entertain thousands of people for a weekend, happens to be our ‘pressure’.  At the moment, we’re still on the run-up to the UK Corporate Games 2011, being staged in Loughborough and things are going to get much busier in the office, but we think that’s when the fun starts!
